Plot Synopsis
Once a year, the residents of Katakai, a small town in northern Japan, sponsor some of the biggest fireworks displays in the world. 16-year old Hana comes home from the hospital on the day of the Katakai fireworks festival following 6 months of treatment for acute leukemia and learns that her older brother, Taro, has become a social recluse. Hana draws Taro out of his shell and convinces him to start a part-time job delivering newspapers, but within months, she suffers a relapse and tragically dies of advanced leukemia. Taro resolves to create a fireworks display especially for Hana. On the night of the big festival, Taro's creation fills the night sky with cascades of brilliant red, Hana’s favourite colour. Taro and his parents watch the beautiful fireworks bloom and scatter until the last glimmer disappears...
